DOPESTYLE'S "The Little Happy/Fool's Pool" dbl-album HITS #3 on the CMJ HIP HOP COLLEGE CHARTS!!!!!!
Dopestyle -“The Little Happy/Fool’s Pool”
Double-Album CD:
Label: Daly City Records
Catalog No: DCR-122
-----------------------------------------------The first album, “The Little Happy” combines mid-1990’s ‘Golden Age’ era Hip-Hop meets Shoegazer fuzz & melodic Low rider classic R&B oldies with crackling Lo-Fi sensibilities into an intoxicatingly refreshing & effortlessly engaging sound tapestry. Both albums are produced in their entirety by Deejay 4am, whose expansive audio sound coloring & fluid texturing create emotively moving & daydream-ish atmospherics. Add to this the charismatic & quirky Emcee Dopestyle’s playful, insightful, and always provocative words & observations on life, relationships, & immortality…you get a soundtrack for persevering and staying ever hopeful & optimistic throughout life’s ups & downs. The album starts off on a celebratory note on songs such as “Welcome My Friends” & the cameo highlight posse song, “We Put It Down” featuring Pro The Leader & Opio f/ Souls of Mischief/Hieroglyphics. But by mid-album a melancholy gradually sets in on songs such as “Halogen (Jacob’s Song), a song depicting in 1st person narrative the many hard trials experienced by the emcee’s longtime friend & one-time homeless associate, Jacob. On other songs such as “Sleepless Babes” the effects of incest on family members indirectly touched by this crime is described in 3rd person narrative. Other songs along the way inject lightheartedness & even niavete on songs such as “Wake Up In The Morning,” a song focusing on the rigors of living with Insomnia to “Stress Reducer,” a song on the calming effects associated with Marijuana. Then we come to the title theme song, “The Little Happy,” a song that deals with finding contentment in one’s life. Then the final song, “The Last Party (old man blues),” a song in 1st person narrative detailing the process of growing older as one looks back on his life, accepting his mistakes & decisions, and coming to full acceptance with an ever still hopeful eye & optimism making the conscious choice to die with dignity.
-----------------------------------------------The recording for the second album, “Fool’s Pool” began shortly after the release of Kutmasta Kurt Presents Dopestyle 1231 in 2004. At this point in Dopestyle’s life, he was going through what could be described as a ‘mental break.’ This album reflects much of that challenging time for the emcee. As a self-described ‘Court Jester,’ Dopestyle is in rare form as he banters & hiccups luridly on songs such as “Drunk Phunk,” a total freestyle recorded while he was intoxicated that flawlessly segues into other songs such as “Here It Is Herpes…Johnny’s Story,” a song in 1st person narrative relaying the story of Dopestyle’s close friend & confidant, John. A song sparked at that time, by a recent STD scare Dopestyle experienced on his own. However on songs such as the Motion-Man assisted “The Bald Head Brute & The Long hair Laymen,” “Peekaboo,” “Thrillers & Killers,” and the Fathed assisted, “Riding Shotgun,” we see a balance between the urbane and the banter. Sonically, the less refined, raw reverberations helmed by Deejay 4am is nonetheless engaging & forward thinking in scope & execution.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KSCR 93.5 FM REVIEWS DOPESTYLE'S "The Little Happy/Fool's Pool" dbl-CD
KSCR Review:
Double album released by Bay Area based Dopestyle, the first half - “The Little Happy”, blends lo-fi fuzz and warmth with some fairly heavy subject matter. “Halogen”, a track dedicated to the MC’s longtime (and sometimes homeless) friend Jacob, examines life on the street to almost unnerving detail. “Patty Cake” takes a nursery-rhyme rythmic motif and wraps it around depictions of abusive relationships, and “Sleepless Babes” tackles the topic of incest and its residual effects on all parties involved. Again, all of these are more than nice enough to listen to in the background, while offering gripping narratives upon closer inspection. Second half “Fool’s Pool” hits you immediately with “Baby, Baby, Baby” , a hollow, echoing splash of cold water setting the tone for the following 14 tracks (plus 2 bonus included on this release). This material was recorded in 2004, following the release of the Kutmasta Kurt produced “Dopestyle 1231” during a period of near mental breakdown. “Drunk Funk” is a suffocating track, channeling the kind of energy found on “Daydream Nation’s” darker moments, made a bit disturbing for the fact that it was recorded under the influence. There’s no smiling on this record, and while it’s just as engaging as the first half, both musically and lyrically, it’s far more exhausting.

KUTMASTA KURT: Presents Dopestyle 1231
By CHAD SWIATECKI
If Massive Attack focused more on lyrics and the “hop” part of their triphop sonic gumbo, it might sound like the claustrophobic cyphers on the debut album by Dopestyle 1231. The latest combo to emerge from the fertile crescent of California’s Bay Area, MC Dopestyle and DJ Tom C throw off the backpacks in favor of tales of drugs—looking at both sides of their use and trade atop the funereal beats and church bells of “Granulated Sugar”—followed by Dopestyle’s metal-guitar-fueled descent into solitary madness on “Lone Ramblin’.” Underground legend and executive producer KutMasta Kurt lends his pedigree without locking in a strictly old-school feel, and brings cohort and Ultramagnetic MC Kool Keith on board for the pimp slap of “Wedgie.” Other guests fare better than Keith, though, especially Cannibal Ox’s Vast Aire and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien’s cartoonish drawl on “Size Double D.” But everyone who stops by does so in service of the duo’s juxtaposition of the pretty and the pretty gruesome, a place where mixing gentle piano and grim sentiments like “stab you with a microphone ’til all you stupid wack rappers bleed” (“Darkspell”) makes perfect sense.
